Superbowl, baby! Go Cards!

Ok, so most Arizonans are just jumping on the Cardinal bandwagon now that our home team is in the Superbowl. I've only been to one Cards game with Ashlyn.
For years, no one gave them much credit. Dan & I aren't the biggest football fans, and have been known to watch the Superbowl just for the 2 million dollar commercials, but we will be watching on Sunday and cheering for the Cardinals. No matter which team you're rooting for, you've got to love Kurt Warner and his story! {Read it at SNOPES} We love underdogs, and it's fun to see our whole town buzzing with Cardinal fever.

GO CARDS!

Cute kiddos and a reluctant ballerina...

Instead of subjecting my family to traditional "family pictures," we went to the park last week and took my camera with the intent of taking some pictures on the sly. Claire was NOT in the mood, but we did catch a few worth saving.  I love taking pictures at sunset, when the light is warm and beautiful.
My sister Monica gave Claire a tutu for Christmas so, of course I had play dress up! She looked very ladylike, but all she wanted to do was throw rocks in the lake and play in the dirt. That's my girl!!!

And so it goes...

Love this!  How true:-)

A new year, a new President...

Inauguration Day, 2009:

It's interesting that Barack Obama will be sworn in as our 44th President the day after the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. Though I am nervous about many of his policies, I am truly excited about this historic occasion for our country. He will be my President and yours and I hope that this country can be united in our support for this new "first family." I pray that President Obama will lead our country with honor...

Malted Milk Cookies

When I was little, I always remember my Mom having freshly-baked cookies in our kitchen. My friends knew they could drop by for "Nancy cookies" anytime. My brother C.J.'s friends begged Mom to send them her cookies on their missions. My cute Mom always jokes that she should've been born with blue fur and googly eyes! Well, in keeping with that tradition, Dan and Ashlyn have started baking cookies every Sunday afternoon. We taste-test the cookie dough (...you know you do too:-) and give them away often so we don't eat them all. Here are some of our favorite new recipes as of late...

*Malted Milk Cookies*
Ingredients:
2 oz. unsweetened chocolate, melted and cooled
1 cup butter
3/4 c. sugar
3/4 c. packed brown sugar
1 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp. vanilla
2 3/4 c. flour
1/2 c. instant malted milk powder
1 1/2 cups malted milk balls (Whoppers), cut in half

Directions:
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Melt unsweetened chocolate in a glass bowl in the microwave for 1 minute. Stir and heat for 30 seconds more, or until chocolate is melted. Set aside.

Cream together butter, sugars and baking soda. Beat in the melted chocolate, eggs and vanilla.   Scrape the sides of the bowl to mix completely. Add the malted milk powder and flour gradually, beating slowly. Stir in the malted milk balls.

Drop dough by rounded teaspoons onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake for 9-10 minutes, or until edges are slightly firm. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute, then transfer to cooling rack and let cool.

Number Of Servings: About 3 dozen cookies
Preparation Time: 15 minutes/ 30 minutes to bake

Happy New Year?

In the words of Counting Crows'
"A Long December":
It's been a long December and there's reason to believe maybe this year will be better than the last...

Well, the end of 2008 ended on a down note, for the most part. I suspect that many of you felt the same. We are very thankful for what we have and know that the economy and housing market may take the good part of 2009 or longer to improve. I'm especially grateful for my sweet husband who's so talented and driven and is constantly working hard for our family. I'm thankful for our loyal and true friends, for our health, for our knowledge of the gospel of Jesus Christ that guides us, for our amazing friends at church and for kids that bring us joy and probably teach us more than we teach them. Here's to a New Year...

He's finally HOME!!!

On Saturday, Jan. 10th, 2009 my only brother C.J. returned home from his mission to Curitiba, Brazil for the LDS church! The kids and I stayed in Utah and missed a week of school so we could be there. My 4 sisters and I all got married at age 20 or 21, so none of us served missions. It's been fun to see the kids so excited about C.J.'s mission. I'm grateful for such a powerful example of service and dedication to the gospel of Jesus Christ. We all met at the Salt Lake International airport at Noon and the anticipation was off the charts! C.J. was 6'5" when he left on Jan. 28th, 2007 and we knew from his weekly e-mails and pictures that he'd stayed about the same height. We waited anxiously for him to come down the escalator...

What a great day! It's been 2 years of worry about him living in Brazil, sometimes in less than ideal living conditions, eating "interesting" new foods, speaking Portuguese, and dealing with very large spiders! He looked amazing. I thought his shoulders were broader, his face more angular and manly. I was almost 13 when he was born, so I remember rocking him to sleep! This man who came home is so mature, handsome and smart. Ashlyn worried that she wouldn't be able to understand him after hearing that he was having a hard time speaking English when talking with my family on the phone on Christmas Day. The kids just about mauled him after he hugged my parents. In the 2 years since he's been gone, our family has added 4 new grandkids to the mix (Lisa's Noah, my Claire, Monica's Michael & Andrea's Meg) that he met for the first time! Welcome home, C.J.!!! We missed you so much!

Upon walking into my parents' home, C.J. immediately took off his shoes and made a "carpet angel" on the carpet. He hasn't walked on carpet except briefly in the mission home in 2 years! We laughed when he marveled over the new front loading washer & dryer in the laundry room, when he's been washing his clothes by hand. It was fun to hear all the things he's been living without that he's grateful for, yet we could tell he was having mixed emotions about being away from the Brazilians he's come to love.
His mission release later that afternoon was an experience I'll never forget. It was just our Stake President and our immediate family there. C.J. got a little emotional when asked to remove his mission badge. President Boyer talked about how many return missionaries refer to their missions as the "peak" of their spiritual experience. He told C.J. that when you climb to the top of a high peak, you can see for the first time the other peaks and valleys out there which are not visible from the ground. He encouraged him to continually seek for those experiences throughout his life.  He then gave C.J. a very special priesthood blessing. I was so glad to be there with my whole family!
He spoke in sacrament meeting the next day, Sunday, Jan. 11th and began school at the University of Utah (GO UTES!) Monday, Jan. 12th......so he's jumping right back into his life here. He's pre-med, so it's great that he's in the habit to study and work hard:-)
Ashlyn and my nieces Jane & Anna sang "Holding Hands Around the World" in sacrament meeting and sounded like little angels! The kids and I unfortunately left to come home to Arizona shortly after C.J. spoke in church on Sunday, so we only had a day with him. Ashlyn & I cried while going through security at the airport (she started it). Then it was home to unpack, take down Christmas decorations and get the kids ready for school the next day...

First time: Ashlyn hits the slopes!

I LOVE to ski!!! I've missed the Utah mountains and the ability to be on the slopes in an easy 1/2 hour drive. Alta has free skiing from 3-4:30 PM each day on their Sunnyside lift, so I took Ashlyn 2 days in a row. These 2 days couldn't have been more different! The first day was freezing, with low visibility.....not a great first-time-ski-lesson for Ashlyn. I started to think that enrolling her in Ski School would be much easier on our relationship than trying to teach her myself! She was angry, cold, hesitant and scared and by the time we'd made it down our first hill, the ski patrol was encouraging everyone to hurry. Apparently the road was closing at 5 for avalanche prevention, so Ashlyn hopped on the ski patrol snowmobile and I skied behind.

I feared that Ashlyn would hang up her skis after her first lesson, but thankfully, she was excited to try again. The next day was so much better! It was 45 degrees when we arrived and I couldn't have asked for a more beautiful day to ski with Ashlyn. I was so proud of the progress she made and I even saw her smile a few times:-) On the way home, she took these beautiful sunset pictures. Thanks to Tyler and Jane for lending us your ski equipment!

The Living Planet Aquarium...

We enjoyed being inside at the aquarium in Sandy while it was quite the blizzard outside! Though this is a small aquarium , the kids loved seeing the local lake & stream fish, jellyfish, seahorses and stingray. When we left, Corey was wet up to his elbows (no surprise there!)

The big 25.....ooops, 26!

Happy birthday, Moes! I know you have never liked your New Year's Day birthday, but I hope you had a good one this year. I have to laugh....my Mom & I made Monica a cake on Dec. 31st and my Mom had decorated it with a big "25." I helped to fill it in. When Moes came over that night, she laughed and said, "I love it, but I'm actually 26!" When your birthday's the first day of the New Year, it's easy to miscalculate:-) We love you, Moes!!!

New Year's Eve, 2008---->2009

For New Years's Eve my whole family (except Lisa) went to the Jasmine restaurant for dinner because my youngest sister Natalie was waitressing there. After a yummy dinner, we went back to my parents' and played games. We watched part of a Bon Jovi concert and sang at the top of our lungs to "Livin' On a Prayer" and saw motorcross lunatic Robbie Maddison jump on top of the Arc de Triumph replica in Las Vegas...then back down. It was crazy! If you didn't see it, check out the video here. It's the second video on the site.

The best part was getting my New Year's Eve kiss from Dan! Happy 2009!!!

Miller family Nativity, 2008

This Christmas we began a new tradition: the Miller family Nativity! My sister Andrea made these amazing costumes and each child was able to dress up and participate. Dan read the story from the Bible. The video below shows it all.....crying babies and all!

The Nutcracker, take 2!

Ashlyn & I were fortunate this year to get to enjoy The Nutcracker twice this year: first in Arizona, and then in Utah! On Saturday, Dec. 27th, we enjoyed a girls' night out with all of my sisters, nieces (that were old enough to come), my cute Mom & Grammy. Although we enjoyed them both, I have to say that Ballet West's performance in Salt Lake was amazing! The new scenery & many new costumes were incredible and nothing compares to this version of "Mother Buffoon" or Clara's Christmas tree as it grows. After the ballet, we drove past Temple Square to see the Christmas lights from the warmth of the car. It's awfully cold here! Brrrrrrrrr!

Thanks to Nats for the pictures;-)
